Have you met George the Farmer? Just like MiniJumbuk, George is another great Limestone Coast local, and we were excited to meet him on a recent visit to our Naracoorte Mill. The epitome of a typical Aussie farmer, George is a fabulous ambassador for the rural industry, highlighting the important role that farmers play in providing food and fibre to us all.
Initially developed as a series of ‘George the Farmer’ books, George Farmer, his agronomist wife, Dr Ruby and their children, Lucy and Jack educate and entertain their audience with their rural escapades. A passionate farming family, the Farmers love to share their knowledge, encouraging kids of all ages to learn about farm life throughout the year.
Limestone Coast residents, author Simone Kain and illustrator Ben Hood joined forces in 2012, sharing their vision for ‘a world where kids connect to the earth, food and farm’. Starting with a series of books, their range rapidly expanded to include music, toys and educational resources for schools. More recently, George has become a TV star!
In his quest for knowledge, and with the assistance of his buddies Ben and Simone, George visits his friends in regional and rural communities. Each visit explores a different facet of our primary industries to demonstrate the ’paddock to plate’ process of agriculture. From fishing to forestry, chickens to chickpeas and everything in between, George highlights Australia’s fabulous farmers and their importance in our everyday lives.
In his ‘Wool from Sheep’ episode, having visited a local farmer at shearing time, George was eager to find out what happened to the wool after it left the farm. Fortunately, with MiniJumbuk just up the road, George was able to enjoy a VIP tour of the MiniJumbuk Mill to see how wool is used to create our cosy Limestone Coast quilts and comfy mattress toppers. Guaranteed to delight adults and children alike, you can enjoy George’s visit to the sheep farm and MiniJumbuk on their youtube channel.
