World Sleep Day - Sleep essentials to achieve your best night’s sleep

World Sleep Day - Sleep essentials to achieve your best night’s sleep

With the theme, ‘Quality Sleep, Sound Mind, Happy World’, March 18, 2022 is World Sleep Day. An annual event created by members of the medical and healthcare professions, the day highlights the important role sleep plays in our lives. The focus this year is the relationship between high quality sleep and positive mental health outcomes. According to the organisers, “the three elements of good quality sleep are:

Duration - The length of sleep should be sufficient for the sleeper to be rested and alert the following day.

Continuity - Sleep periods should be seamless without fragmentation.

Depth - Sleep should be deep enough to be restorative.”

Harness the power of good sleep and boost your mood! The following sleep tips are simple, easy to implement and will have you sleeping like a baby in no time.

  • Choose natural fibres. Unlike synthetic or manmade fibres, natural fibres are breathable and help to prevent night-time overheating. Wool, cotton and bamboo are ideal choices for your bedding and sleepwear, allowing your body to remain at a comfortable temperature throughout the night.
  • Adapt your bedding as the seasons change. As the nights become chilly, warmer sleepers may choose to simply add an extra rug or blanket to a lighter cooler summer quilt. Cold sleepers in colder climates will enjoy the toastiness of a MiniJumbuk Thermal quilt, designed to provide lightweight warmth on the chilliest winter evenings.
  • Create a calm relaxing atmosphere and unwind before sleep. A regular bedtime routine cues your body that it is time to relax and prepare for sleep. Turn off devices that emit the blue light that interfere with your sleep hormones. Instead, dim the lights and try a quiet meditation or yoga practice or spend some time reading your favourite book with a soothing cup of herbal tea.
