There are many different types of bed linens available these days to suite all tastes and budgets.
Here are some of the most common:
Cotton - the most popular and commonly found bed linen. Cotton is breathable, soft, durable and easy to care for. The feel of your cotton sheets or doona cover will depend on the quality of the cotton and its method of manufacture. Organic cotton is also an option, made from cotton grown without pesticides.
Egyptian Cotton - grown in the Nile Valley in Egypt, Egyptian cotton is famed as being the most luxurious cotton around. Egyptian cotton has a soft, strong and supple weave so it has less lint and is less likely to pill.
Cotton Blend - generally a cotton blend is cotton mixed with a man-made fibre such as polyester or rayon. Cotton blend sheets tend to be more affordable, dry quickly and are less likely to wrinkle. Sheets made from cotton blend may be less breathable than 100% natural fibres, and may pill more.
Linen - linen is also a natural fibre but it is totally different to cotton. Linen comes from the flax plant, and has unique thermal properties just like wool. Linen will keep you cool in summer and warm in winter. Linen feels very luxurious and the soft wrinkles of linen can be very appealing too!
Bamboo - bamboo sheets also have a soft, silky feel and bamboo is super eco-friendly. Bamboo sheets are made from bamboo grass which is a sustainable crop. Bamboo is lightweight and durable, plus it is gentle on sensitive skin.
Silk - silk is another natural product that has been used in textiles for centuries. Silk comes from fibres produced by silk caterpillars. Silk is luxurious, it is also breathable and a good thermal regulator. Silk tends to be one of the more expensive bed linen fabrics.
