Our top 5 lullabies for kids

Our top 5 lullabies for kids

Lullabies have long been used to soothe babies and children to sleep. The comforting words, slow, steady tempos and soft melodies combine for a sedative, sleep inducing effect on your child. Included as a part of a bedtime routine lullabies, particularly combined with movements like rocking and stroking, can stimulate brain function benefitting your child's language and vocal skills.

With lullabies used in many cultures around the world there are thousands to choose from. Traditional lullabies whilst soothing, frequently describe the danger should the child cry wakening the evil characters from folklore tales. Others are simpler with repetitive, more loving lyrics. And when you're all over tradition, why not try something a little unconventional? Get your groove on and strip back some of our modern classics.

While it is a good idea to have a few favourites or 'go to' tunes, if you can't sing or don't know the words - hum! Don't stress that you have a voice that sounds like nails on a blackboard; it is your voice that is recognised and responded to, strengthening the bond between you and your child.

Our favourite picks include

Brahms Lullaby - Written by German composer Johannes Brahms, the words maybe old fashioned but this timeless lullaby is easy to hum.

Rock a Bye Baby - This tune is thought to have origins with the Native American Indians, who dangled their cradles from the tree tops to rock gently in the breeze.

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star - With its simple lyrics, this popular English lullaby has long been a favourite, children delighting in both its soothing melody and accompanying hand gestures.

Rainbow Connection - Gently croon your child to sleep with Kermit the Frog and his promises of a bright future filled with rainbows and magic.

Sweet Child O'Mine - Modern lyrics like these from Gun's N Roses along with musicians such as Led Zepplin, Elton John, Snow Patrol, The Beatles or Taylor Swift offer an endless source of musical inspiration for your serenading. Enjoy this special time with your child, remembering of course, that air guitar is optional!
